Founded around 3100 BC by Pharaoh Narmer, Memphis was the first capital of unified Egypt and one of the main administrative and commercial centers of the Old Kingdom.
Today, its most significant remains are preserved in the open‑air museum of Mit Rahina, where the monumental colossal statue of Ramesses II and a large calcite sphinx stand out — remarkable witnesses to the ancient splendor of the city.
